This five-day programme introduces the philosophy and methodology of psychology and counselling from an Islamic perspective. It is an ideal introduction for mental health professionals and interested students. The course will present a theoretical understanding of mental health based on Islamic paradigm as well as suggest practical ways of working with mentally distressed individuals. Those who successfully complete the programme will be rewarded with a Certificate in Counselling from an Islamic Theoretical Orientation, presented by both Cambridge Muslim College (CMC) and the International Association of Islamic Psychology (IAIP).
The programme will take place in Manchester in the UK and will be led by Professor Rasjid Skinner. Abdallah Rothman will present via video lecture and Guest lecturers include Shaykh Saeed Nasser, Sheikh Idris Watts, Georgina Cardo and Dr Samer Dajani Course material will be delivered in a combination of lecture, discussion, and experiential learning.

Program Objectives

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

• Distinguish culturally relative factors from universal factors in Western psychology.
  ● Identify and describe Islamic models of the self.
  ● Describe the therapeutic relationship from an Islamic perspective.
  ● Identify therapeutic aims and objectives of Islamic psychology/counselling.
  ● Identify a range of Islamic perspectives on mental health diagnosis.
  ● Describe Western approaches to therapy and their applicability to Muslims.
  ● Apply Islamic psychological principles in diagnosis and treatment using case studies.

  Professor Rasjid Skinner and guest lecturers (confirmed Saeed Nasser and Idris Watts)
• Programme Completion Certificate accredited by the IAIP

***COVID RESTRICTIONS***

Due to the current restrictions in place please be advised that the following arrangements are required to adhere to during the course

Protection: the room is a well ventilated hall, we shall place tables and chairs at a distance of 2 meters apart.  windows will be open throughout the day, weather permitting or every hour during breaks. The venue is cleaned regularly. 

Your Health: It goes without saying but Please do not attend if you are experiencing any symptoms of Covid or your health is compromised and you are in the ‘at risk’ category.  We will request a temperature check at the beginning of each day. No hand shaking or hugging, please maintain social distance, do wear a mask or visor if you feel comfortable in doing so, it is not compulsory inside the course hall but is in congregational prayer (update nearer the time if this is a requirement )

Toilets: There is a bathroom upstairs for men and downstairs for women with a 1 person at a time entry, this shouldn’t be a issue due to low numbers of attendees.

Sanitation: There is hand sanitiser in the building and spray and wipes for tables and chairs. Please bring a bag for your shoes and your own prayer mat and coffee/tea mug.

Refreshments: A hot drink and water bottle station will be set up, please use your own cup or reuse/wash the mugs provided.

Catering: Unfortunately due to covid restrictions we are unable to provided catering inside the venue, however you/we can bring in your own or order in sandwich/disposable food (if its raining!) or walk out to the many shops, takeaways and cafes nearby. Sainsburys, sandwich shop, first and chips, chicken takeaway, co-op, subway, nandos etc all nearby walking distance. You will be required to clean up your own catering using bins provided and spray/wipes. 

Prayer Facilities: congregational Prayer is running  male (downstairs) and female prayer area (upstairs in main hall). Please bring your own prayer mat and bag for your shoes.

Travel: Nearest Train – Mauldeth Road Nearest Airport – Manchester Airport

Accommodation: There are some apartments and houses available for rent in the area (£150 single -£850 shared for 5 nights). Check booking.com or others and search Fallowfield.   Luther king House (walking distance)  is £156 for 5 nights single/double bed room.

There are many other hotels in the area and plenty of restaurants, the location is a student hub of Manchester and near the popular Wilmslow  road curry mile!
